Volvo Penta Petrol Engine – VODIA 8 pin

Volvo Penta Petrol engines have 3 different connection types which means that depending on the model and age of your engine, it will determine which connection method and programming type is required.

This post relates to Volvo Penta Petrol engines which utilise what is called the VODIA 8 pin connector. The image below indicates what the plug looks like on the engine. It may include the waterproof cover on the connector as shown, but this is removed once we connect our Yacht Devices Engine Gateway YDEG-04 and adaptor cable to the engine.

You can verify you have the correct plug by referencing the wire colours going into the plug at the rear. Before proceeding it is a good idea to confirm that these are the correct wires into the correct position to avoid damage.

To connect our Yacht Devices Engine Gateway (YDEG-04) to this engine it requires our additional VODIA 8 pin to 6 pin adaptor cable. The next diagram shows how this all connects together and the engine gateway connects to the NMEA2000 network.

Remember that since we need to connect the gateway at the engine location it might be necessary to extend your NMEA2000 backbone into the engine room and then correctly terminate it to ensure compliance with NMEA2000 standards.
